Hyperlite Mountain Gear Ultamid 2 Review

An ultralight, pyramid-style tarp that is impressively light and completely waterproof.

The Hyperlite Mountain Gear Ultamid 2 is a minimalist, ultra-lightweight 4-season shelter. It uses high-quality Dyneema composite material, which impressed us during testing. It’s fully waterproof, ensuring you stay dry inside the spacious and tall shelter. However, note that accessories such as the floor, bug netting, stakes, and central pole aren’t included and must be purchased separately, which can increase the overall cost.

Performance and Storm Resistance

The Ultamid 2 stands out for its waterproof capabilities, having withstood a multi-day storm with rain turning into snow without any leakage. Wind resistance relies on properly anchoring the tent, and with 15 anchor points, it can withstand moderate to strong winds when correctly secured. The tent’s durability is due to its Dyneema fabric, waterproof zipper, strong taped seams, and vents with overhangs that keep out water. In snowy conditions, the snow that accumulates at the base blocks wind from entering, though a gap in the walls could let snow and wind in. If camping in buggy areas, purchasing the mesh insert is highly recommended for added protection.

Ease of Use

Setting up the Ultamid 2 can be a bit tricky, as it requires strong anchoring at various points to withstand wind. However, once set up, it offers 63 square feet of floor space and a 64-inch peak height, making it the most spacious tent in our review. While setting up takes effort, taking it down is simple, and it packs easily into the Dyneema stuff sack. Condensation is minimized by two large vents at the peak, and additional accessories like a tarp or floor insert are needed for a more comfortable experience.

Weight

At just 1.49 pounds, the Ultamid 2 is among the lightest 4-season tents. However, this weight doesn’t include stakes, the central pole, or the insert/floor. If you add the mesh insert, the total weight increases by 1.4 pounds. Overall, it is an ultralight, space-efficient option for minimalist backpackers.

Quality of Construction

The Ultamid 2 is constructed from Dyneema composite fabric, which is highly durable and waterproof. Reinforced connection points and a sturdy zipper enhance its durability. The design is functional, with easy-to-tighten cords and a smooth zipper.

Versatility

The Ultamid 2 is versatile for a variety of outdoor activities, such as mountaineering, bike-packing, and backpacking. However, it may not be ideal for long expeditions in extreme environments, like glaciers, where its size might be a disadvantage. You’ll also need to purchase additional accessories like stakes, poles, and inserts if desired. The tent is not suitable for extreme winds and requires attention during precipitation, as damp conditions can loosen anchor points.

Should You Buy the Hyperlite Mountain Gear Ultamid 2?

If you’re a minimalist looking to reduce pack weight, the Ultamid 2 is an excellent choice. It will keep you dry and is easy to pack, though it does require careful setup in high winds. It’s a great option for lightweight backpacking, but for full-scale expeditions or alpine climbing, there are other more suitable options.

Alternative 4-Season Tents to Consider

For a more durable, double-wall 4-season tent, consider the Hilleberg Jannu, which has proven reliable for long expeditions. The Mountain Hardwear Trango 2 is another great option for expeditions. For fast, light mountain trips, the Samaya2.0 is worth checking out.
